Combined Facial Treatment

Introduction

The Spring Laser Clinic uses a combination of advanced laser technology and glycolic skin peels (chemical peels) to improve the texture of the skin.  The treatment rejuvenates the skin by removing and smoothing fine lines, wrinkles and other blemishes and generally enhancing the skin's complexion.

How does Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work?

The IPL system produces short pulses of intense light that are directed into the skin and absorbed by small blood vessels within the dermis and epidermis.  This causes the skin to heat up and causes very mild, reversible thermal damage to the epidermis.  The skin reacts to this damage by increasing the production of collagen which ‘irons out’ fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in an improved appearance of the skin texture.  The glycolic skin peel both improves the effect of the IPL treatment by allowing the light to penetrate to the epidermis more effectively and it also improves skin appearance by removing dead skin cells and cleaning the skin of impurities.

 Who cannot be treated?

Almost everyone can be treated, apart from very dark skinned or sun-tanned individuals.  This is because these types of skin have higher levels of melanin.  The light will be absorbed by the melanin in the skin and may damage the skin.

How is the treatment carried out?

As individuals react in different ways to the treatment, a test patch is always taken to ensure that there are no adverse reactions.

The pre-peel pack must be used for at least two weeks prior to treatment to prepare the skin but not in the 24 hours immediately prior to treatment.

During the treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleaned and a mild (40%), relaxing skin peel is applied and left on the skin for 5 to 8 minutes.  The peel is then removed, along with the top layers of dead skin, leaving the skin feeling smoother and refreshed.

A thin layer of gel is applied to the skin. This helps cool the skin and ensures that light is transmitted effectively to the skin.  The rectangular quartz applicator is placed in contact with the skin surface and the light is pulsed through the quartz.  The applicator is then moved to the next area and the process repeated.

Length and Number of treatment sessions?

Typically six treatments will be needed at two to three week intervals.  The treatments will usually take about 30 minutes.

 Does it hurt?

As the light energy is absorbed by the skin, it heats up and creates the sensation of a sharp pinprick.  No anaesthesia is required, other than cooling the skin.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Redness and a slight burning sensation are normal after treatment.  Any redness generally dies down within 30 minutes, but some people may remain red for up to 24 hours.  The skin is cooled after treatment to ease these symptoms.

It is necessary to avoid sun exposure or to use a high protection sunscreen for two to four weeks after treatment.  The Spring Laser Clinic recommends and supplies sunscreen from Jan Marini for this purpose.

 Are there any side effects?

Most patients experience no side-effects other than a temporary reddening of the skin.  Very rarely, the skin may become darker or lighter or a small blister may form.
